The Directory of Architects is available (free!) for all architects and practices to upload comprehensive practice information, including images of their work. This database is a very useful tool for prospective clients & consultants to locate an architect.
If you are looking for staff or seeking new challenges, vacancies may be advertised on the site (also free!).
The site also contains details of the EAA council membership & minutes of council meetings, so all EAA chapter members can keep up to date with what we are doing and who to contact on relevant issues, like education, RIAS and local authority performance.
EAA Awards 2010 Announced
Balmoral Hotel, 1st April 2010
The Edinburgh Architectural Association Awards were announced and presented at a drinks reception in the Balmoral Hotel on Thursday 1st April attended by 120 architects and their guests.
Over 40 entries were submitted this year and 12 short-listed projects were visited by the judging panel in February. Awards were made in three categories: Building of the Year; Conservation and Regeneration; and Small Project. The judging panel comprised Robert Black, President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association, Professor Andrew MacMillan OBE, leading landscape architect Eelco Hooftman and Ian Stewart, EAA Council Member. Robert Black said "It is gratifying and encouraging that the profession continues to achieve such a high standard of architecture across a wide variety of building types".
The Building of the Year Award was won by Nicoll Russell Studios for Howden Park Centre in Livingston. The Centre is West Lothian's major arts venue for professional and community groups as well as for functions, conferences and other events. It includes a 300 seat auditorium, rehearsal space and dance studios and is the home of Firefly Youth Theatre. The Building of the Year Award is sponsored by Levolux.

LDN Architects received the Conservation and Regeneration Award for 57-59 Bread Street, the conversion of a building previously used, among other things, as a print works and a gym. Nestled in the back green of the surrounding tenements, the building is designed to perform to the highest environmental standards. Allan Murray Architects was commended for its Ravelston XXIII development . The Conservation/Regeneration Award is sponsored by MJM Group.
The Small Projects Award was made to Konishi Gaffney architects for their Japanese House. Designed for a Scottish-Japanese family, the house incorporates several Japanese themes and provides a light-filled and comfortable family home in Portobello. WT Architecture received a commendation for their conversion of a listed mews workshop in Circus Lane to an intricate maisonette. The Small Projects Award is sponsored by Cairney Architectural Hardware Solutions.

Our Best Buildings: Poll Results
As a celebration of 150 years of the Edinburgh Architectural Association, its Council chose three notable buildings from each decade since its inception.
To celebrate the wealth and variety of wonderful buildings in Edinburgh, the Lothians, the Borders and West Fife, people were invited to vote for the building they liked best from each decade. (And to let us know if their favourite building didn't appear.)
The poll closed on 30th June and you can see the results by clicking here .The buildings chosen will be highlighted in a book published later in the year.

SCOTLAND AND ROME EXHIBITION
To celebrate the papal visit, the Royal Scottish Academy presents an exhibition which aims to show the historical and ongoing links between Scotland and Rome formed over the course of the centuries.
The exhibition is in the RSA Library and runs from 13th - 30th September 2010. Royal Scottish Academy NEW WORKS

The 'V&A at Dundee - Making it Happen' exhibition features work from the six shortlisted teams of world-class architects and designers who have put forward outstanding ideas for a landmark building that will house the V&A at Dundee and dominate Dundee’s waterfront. The exhibition will be held in the University of Abertay Dundee library in Bell Street, Dundee, from September 29th to November 4th. Admission is free.

International Mediation in Construction Conference
This one-day conference in Glasgow will explore the use of mediation in construction and examine current practices in Scotland, the UK and within the wider international context. The aim of the conference is to promote mediation and maximise its use.
