CHALMERS CHURCH

JUDGES COMMENTS

“Chalmers Church is not a typical church conversion; LDN’s modest intervention has been instrumental in bringing Morningside’s earliest church back into use as a place of worship and gives it prominence in the community again.

We found the interventions sensitive to the category B listing in their scale but robust and practical, ensuring the church is accessible to everyone and can accommodate a wide-ranging programme which we experienced first hand when visiting. There was a buzz about the place with a toddlers’ group gathering in the main space and people working in the quiet light-filled offices above taking full advantage of the sun filtering through the beautifully restored stained-glass windows.

The king post timber structure has been exposed and timber panelling previously housing the organ restored. It was a joy to visit this project and understand how well it works for the clients and experience the carefully transformed interior first hand.”
