REGENERATION & STRATEGY AWARD

EASTSIDE WASH HOUSE & CARTSHED

JUDGES COMMENTS

“Upon entering the farmyard and walking through to the converted studios, we were transported to an oasis of calm, where we felt part of the wild landscape whilst also being enveloped in composed and beautifully considered details.

Design moves such as the creation of a new pend to offer views to the hills beyond, hidden doors, exposed structure, locally sourced timber and an exceptional level of careful detailing throughout ensure that the modern inventions sit purposefully in their historic 18th century setting.

The most surreal aspect whilst visiting this organic sheep farm was to arrive in the midst of a French fashion shoot, who were utilising the facilities for their new campaign! This project actively demonstrates diversification, regeneration and the vision for Eastside in action.”

McDONALD ROAD COMMUNITY FIRE STATION

JUDGES COMMENTS

“This category exists to recognise and reward strategic thinking, and we felt that on that basis McDonald Road Fire Station was clearly very worthy of a commendation.

We felt that the principle of remodelling an existing urban fire station into a new premises fit for modern use sets a precedent for other public sector buildings of a similar age.

In this case the decision of the design team and clients to reuse the existing structure was a bold one, but in terms of carbon emissions saved makes a significant impact when compared to the construction of a similar new building.

The success of the spaces inside the building, the efficiency of the layout and the improvement that the new facades bring to the public realm are testament to how successful Smith Scott Mullan have been in executing that progressive strategy.”
