Heavy Timber Construction

28th March 18:00-20:00

RIAS Bookshop, Rutland Square

Join us on the 28th of March to hear project architect Ayla Riome (Fraser Livingston Architects) talk about the design and delivery of Simon Square, winner of the EAA Building of the Year 2022, Residential Project and Wood Awards.

When presenting the Building of the Year Award, the judges commented that:

“Simon Square takes its place within the streetscape, challenging conventions for infill residential development in the city whilst respecting the scale and form of its neighbours. It demonstrates the commercial viability of CLT, and advances the case for domestic CLT manufacture in Scotland, an impact beyond its modest scale as a project. It is an ambitious, complex and well executed project which progresses the values of architecture.”

Ayla will talk more about the use of mass timber as a structural method for buildings of this nature and the challenges of delivering this project on a highly constrained and complex site.

The EAA is a charity run by volunteers. We would be grateful if you would consider making a small donation to support our work and allow us to continue our programme of accessible events for the architectural community in Edinburgh.
