Council members

 

Neil Middleton

PRESIDENT

Neil became President of the Edinburgh Architectural Association in May 2024, leading on strategy and chairing monthly Council meetings. He is focused on improving member engagement and encouraging architectural discourse through a more active events programme.

He also runs his own practice, Neil Middleton Architects, designing domestic extensions, developer-led conversions, and community sports buildings. He is also a keen football fan and a busy father of three young children.

Emma Garland

VICE-PRESIDENT

Emma is a chartered architect and joined the EAA in 2022, having studied and practiced architecture in Edinburgh for the past 16 years. Emma has worked across a variety of sectors, most recently focusing on residential and urban design, with a particular interest in the opportunity architecture has to make positive societal and environmental change.

Dan Anderson

VICE-PRESIDENT

Dan joined the EAA as a student representative in 2019, and previously served as Vice President from 2020-23. He leads on the website, social media & communications for the EAA, as well as supporting the organisation of the annual awards.

Joanne McClelland

PAST PRESIDENT

Joanne is a conservation accredited architect with passion for convincing everyone that a fairer world will make a happier world. People, profit and planet.

 

Beth Fraser

Beth is a domestic architect based on the West side of the city close to the Pentlands and Water of Leith where she enjoys relaxing in the great outdoors.  Throughout her career she has dipped in and out of the EAA Council and recently returned in 2025 to become more engaged with the city and wider architectural community.

Seva Yurchenko

Seva re-joined the EAA in 2024 after completing his Part 3 exam. He was a student member from 2021 to 2023. Seva is interested in bridging the gap between the practice, the student community and the academia and developing a creative environment to share ideas. He is currently involved with the Education Working Group.

Seva is an architect at LDN Architects working on a range of conservation projects.

Charles Strang

Charless a retired architect-planner I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to other architects' work, and enjoy their stimulus. Governance, strategy, policy, and a just green transition are other interests, as is a belief that community-based conservation management plans are the way forward.

Mariana Novosivschei

Mariana is an architect dedicated to making the practice of architecture more mindful of supporting all life without infringing on our broader planetary system. She joined the EAA in 2022 and is currently chairing the EAA's Sustainability Working Group.

 

Euan Whitmore

Euan is a sustainability accredited architect with experience in residential, Third Sector and historic building projects. He combines his passion for preserving historic buildings with long-term sustainability and enjoys working with private clients and community groups alike. A recent new member, Euan is keen to help develop the Sustainability Working Group. He’s also a half-decent piper, playing with bands in Scotland, America and Brittany.

Kathleen McBride

Kathleen is a 4th year student on the MA (Hons) Architecture course at Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. She is passionate about how architecture can be used as a tool to shape society and foster community. As a part of the Education Working Group she is working to help bridge the gap between university and professional practice.

 

Holly Spragg

Joanna Simpson

Joanna is the founder and director of Simpson Studio, an architecture and design practice with offices in Edinburgh and London. Established in 2013, the studio creates exceptional, hand crafted buildings where no detail is overlooked, delivering high end residential and bespoke commercial projects across the globe.

 An award winning architect, Joanna graduated with First Class honours from the University of Edinburgh and received the Martin Hackett Award. As part of the EAA she sits on the Edinburgh Development Forum and the Edinburgh Urban Design Panel, contributing to discussions around the future of architecture and development in the city.
