EAA AWARDS 2023
Entries are now open for the 2023 EAA Awards! We are inviting entries across a range of categories, including two new categories for 2023, to celebrate the best of new architecture in the Edinburgh area and across Scotland. Awards 1-5 above will be subject to onsite judging visits.
The Awards Entry Fee is now a single flat rate of £50 per submission.
Judges will have the discretion to consider projects for additional categories to those entered.

1. Small Project: could be new build or refurbishment
“The most responsible investment of materials for greatest benefit.”
• The project must have been completed within 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Submitting Architects DO NOT have to be an EAA Member.
• Entries must be located within the chapter area*.
• Entries must have a contract sum below £500k.
2. Large Project (Non Residential): could be new build or refurbishment
“The most responsible investment of materials for the greatest benefit of society.”
• The project must have been completed within 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Submitting Architects DO NOT have to be an EAA Member.
• Entries must be located within the chapter area*.
• Entries must have a contract sum in excess of £500k.
3. Residential Project – Single Dwelling: could be new build or refurbishment
“Enabling healthy patterns of domestic life with low environmental impacts.”
• The project must have been completed within 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Submitting Architects DO NOT have to be an EAA Member.
• Entries must be located within the chapter area*.
4. Residential Project – Multiple Dwelling: could be new build or refurbishment
“Enabling healthy patterns of domestic life with low environmental impacts.”
• The project must have been completed within 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Submitting Architects DO NOT have to be an EAA Member.
• Entries must be located within the chapter area*.
5. Conservation & Heritage
“The most effective use of conservation or restoration skills for greatest benefit to society.”
• The project must have been completed within 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Submitting Architects DO NOT have to be an EAA Member.
• Entries must be located within the chapter area*.
• There are no cost constraints in this category.
6. Regeneration & Strategy
“The most effective repurposing of land or buildings to support diverse life, or strategic improvement to existing buildings. All scales of project, from small community projects to urban masterplans, are welcome. Strategic thinking could include holistic analysis, long term planning, strategies for long-term investment, fabric improvement, or similar approaches”
• There is no date restriction and projects can be submitted at any RIBA work stage.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Entries must be located within the chapter area*.
• Submitting Architects DO NOT have to be an EAA Member.
• There are no cost constraints in this category.
7. Wood for Good: all projects automatically eligible
“Wood for Good is the timber industry’s campaign to promote use of wood in design and construction. This award could be given to any of the shortlisted projects that demonstrate excellence in the application of timber technology.”
• All completed projects automatically eligible for this award.
8. EAA Ambassador: could be new build or refurbishment
“For projects out with the chapter area.”
• The project must have been completed within 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.
• Entries must be the work of ARB Registered Architects.
• Submitting Architects DO have to be an EAA Member.
• Entries must be located out with the chapter area*.
• There are no cost constraints in this category.
9. Building of the Year: all projects automatically eligible
“The best example of good use of resources for the greater good.”
• All completed projects within the Chapter Area are eligible for shortlisting in the Building of the Year Award and no additional submission is required.
GENERAL RULES OF ENTRY
• Entries must be accompanied by payment** of the submission fee and will be deemed incomplete without it. Receipts will be issued on request.
• Entries must be submitted using the online form.
• Each entry should be accompanied by at least 5 (and ideally around 15-20) images of the project. All images should be submitted with relevant image credits. Images submitted without credit will not be considered. The maximum file size for each image is 2MB. ‘Before and after’ images should be included for any projects working with existing buildings.
• Each entry should be accompanied by at least 1 plan drawing. As existing and as completed plans should be included for any projects working with existing buildings.
• All images and plans should be submitted using the online form.
• Entrants must have their client’s consent to enter the awards.
• Awards are made to the Practice which carried out the Commission.
• Commendation Certificates may be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel.
• The judging panel reserve the right to consider projects for other categories than those entered.
• Should the judging panel decide to withhold an Award in any particular year then an announcement will be made to the short-listed practices prior to the scheduled presentation explaining the reasoning behind the decision.
• The organisers reserve the right to publish and/or exhibit the entries in relation to the promotion of the awards. All entries will be displayed on the EAA website.
• By entering these awards you are agreeing to provide a short presentation at the EAA Award winners lecture event (Date TBC), should your project be successful as an award winner.
• By entering these awards you are agreeing to partake in a Building Tour (Date TBC) should your project be successfully shortlisted. Building Tours will be run as a CPD event conducted by EAA.
• Agreeing with the online Declaration constitutes unqualified acceptance of the rules. Any entries which are found to be in breach of the rules will be disqualified and any costs may be recovered by the EAA.
* Chapter Area comprises of the City of Edinburgh, West Lothian, Mid Lothian, East Lothian, Berwickshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Peebles-shire and Southern Fife (that part to the border of Clackmannanshire and Kinross-shire, and to the west of a line drawn from West Wemyss to Auchmuirbridge Bridge)
