IF BRICKS COULD TALK...

OPEN CALL: Expression of Interest for ArchiFringe Exhibition

You are invited to take part in the upcoming ‘If Bricks Could Talk’ exhibition organised by the Edinburgh Architectural Association as part of the ArchiFringe programme.

In response to this year’s theme of Reciprocity, the EAA is planning an exhibition of materials recovered from demolition and deconstruction projects. The exhibition will take place in early June 2025.

If Bricks Could Talk’ focuses on demolition materials and their past identity as part of the built fabric to raise awareness around circular economy challenges, speculate on the topic of reuse and highlight the potential of these existing materials.

We are looking for practitioners to submit materials from their current or past projects that have an interesting origin or story. There is no restriction on what the material could be, but it needs to be fit for transportation and exhibition.

To express your interest in taking part, please send an email to mail@eaa.org.uk by 12 noon, 9th May 2025 with the following details:

·         Name of the practice / participant

·         Address and contact details.

·         Brief description of the project and of the proposed materials.

·         Any photos of the project and the material.

Once we have a sense of the likely number of exhibits, we will reach out to participants to further develop the exhibition materials.

We have compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions below, but do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any further queries.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Is there maximum allowable size / weight for the submitted materials?

While the gallery can accommodate quite large installations, the number and type of materials to be displayed will have an impact. At this stage there are no restrictions, but the size, weight and shape of the materials will be limited to our ability to safely move it into the gallery space through the shop front door (approx. 900mm wide x 2050mm high).

2. Is there a specific type of material that you are looking for?

No material (unless hazardous) is off limits at this stage.

3. Who will be responsible for transportation?

It is expected that the transport of the material will be organised by the submitting participants. However, this shouldn't be a limiting factor. If needed, we can assist with organising transportation (if a van or other means are required).

4.      What happens to the materials after the exhibition?

Participants will retain ownership of the materials after the exhibition concludes (from 9th June onwards). We anticipate potential interest from local makers in giving some of the materials a second life. If such interest arises, this will be discussed with the relevant participants at the appropriate time.

5.      Who will be responsible for printing any of the associated information?

EAA will be responsible for printing and exhibiting any accompanying information (ie text, signage).
