NEW CONSTITUTION and SCIO STATUS
Forward Progress for the EAA
The EAA is one of the oldest architectural bodies in the UK, founded in 1858 by a group of young architectural students and trainee apprentices ineligible and excluded from joining the more formal Architectural Institute of Scotland.
From its rebellious roots, the EAA went on to thrive and grow, providing support to members for over 160 years. But, as with all old organisations, it was time for some much needed modernisation. In January 2021 the EAA SCIO came into being. This is an Incorporated Charity with a refreshed constitution, ensuring compliance with the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and setting out new core charitable aims, including environmental protection to meet the challenges of climate change.
In keeping with the EAA’s origins the new constitution restores full voting rights to our student members and enables them to also become Charity Trustees on Council. The Incorporated status of the new charity also limits liability for Trustees and EAA members alike.
Thank you to all the EAA members who attended the Special General Meetings which enabled the vote to be carried to approve these changes. Here’s to the next 160 years of the EAA!
The new constitution can be found in the ‘About’ page of our website: a new EAA Strategy, outlining our aims and activities for the period ahead, will be published shortly.
