RETROFIT | Sign the Petition!

Construction is one of the most significant contributors to global carbon emissions, and one of the most important steps for architecture and the built environment to address its responsibilities in tackling the climate emergency is to move away from new build toward retrofit. Converting existing buildings to allow them to be reused for new functions reduces the pollution and carbon release caused by demolition and construction.

However, the current tax system incentivises new build rather than reuse and retrofit. This petition, created by Molly Scott Cato of the Green Party and supported by the Architects’ Climate Action Network, is seeking alterations to VAT law to favour refurbishment projects that reduce the carbon emissions of a building., as well as supporting low-energy products and passive house standards.
