“The judges felt Circus Lane demonstrated a sensitivity yet confidence in its approach to creating an exceptional termination to Edinburgh’s most photographed lane. By responding to the local context, the architect managed to produce a creative bookend which also expresses and reveals its internal layout while remaining private.

The reuse and conservation of the existing building and a well-planned new-build extension on a tight site are combined to create a comfortable and tranquil space despite being on the busy thoroughfare. The careful level of thought into the layout and detailing creates small moments of joy, like a rooflight view of the St. Stephen’s spire from the couch, which elevates the domestic setting.”
