“The judges were pleased to see such a strong collaboration between architect and client exemplifying what can be achieved with a modest brief.

This wrap-around extension is balanced, creating intrigue from the street with obvious nods to the clients profession and personality while settling into what could be considered a very typical Scottish suburban neighbourhood.

 The thoughtful transformation of the ground floor focusses on what’s really important to the client, the kitchen. Often considered the heart of the home, the kitchen is central to the life of this client and its significance evident in its placement. It was clear that the architect had worked hard to understand how the family would use their home by clarifying the circulation with the kitchen in the previous front room making full use of the bay window and linking it to the rest of the house. The level changes have been carefully dealt with allowing the living room additional height and a clear connection to the garden. 

 The project was a joy to visit, and the client’s enthusiasm was clear. They were understandably proud of building the project themselves and the architects' understanding and focus on simple construction methods was instrumental in making this possible.”

“This project felt cosy, protected and considered. The attention to detail and craft was evident and the new additions felt immersed in the private garden with glimpses of it from the moment we walked through the door. The rich materials have been carefully curated and the form of the extension takes cognisance of the constraints and limits of the site. The proposal is calming and subdued with distinct spaces formed within a modest footprint and is well loved by the client and their young family with room created for them to grow.”
